The Bill and Betty Weber House, a Modernist split-level home designed by architect William Weber in 1953, has been relocated and is being restored after facing demolition. Originally built at 606 Transylvania Ave., the house was used as Weber’s personal residence. It was designated a Raleigh Historic Landmark in 2009, but this status was removed at the owner’s request in 2014.
In 2023, new owners of the property filed for a demolition permit. Andy and Melinda Knowles, the current homeowners, negotiated to postpone demolition so they could move the house instead. In 2024, they successfully relocated it to 1514 Delmont Dr., where reconstruction according to its original plans is underway.
A Preservation Revolving Loan Fund request was submitted in March 2025 to support restoration efforts. The Raleigh Historic Development Commission (RHDC) recently voted to endorse this loan and determined that the Weber House meets both historic and architectural criteria for designation as a Raleigh Historic Landmark again.
“The Weber House remains an outstanding example of Modernist design and is a testament to Raleigh’s history of relocating significant structures to ensure their preservation,” according to the RHDC.
