Za’kira Zaleaya Price, a 23-year-old resident of Wilmington, has been arrested and charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense. The North Carolina Department of Insurance reported that Price allegedly acquired $2,341 from Geico Insurance by submitting fraudulent medical bills as part of an automobile collision claim. The incident took place on June 13.

Price was taken into custody on November 5 and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. She appeared in New Hanover County District Court the following day.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey urged residents to remain vigilant about potential insurance fraud. “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”

The Department encourages anyone who suspects insurance fraud or related crimes to report their concerns. Reports can be made anonymously by calling the Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll-free at 888-680-7684 within North Carolina.
