A winter storm warning has been issued for central North Carolina, effective from 1 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. EST Saturday. The region is expected to experience heavy mixed precipitation, with total snow and sleet accumulations of up to three inches and ice accumulations reaching up to two-tenths of an inch. The highest snowfalls are anticipated along the Virginia border.
The National Weather Service has warned that roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, may become slick and hazardous. Commuters should prepare for potentially slippery conditions during the Friday evening commute.
In response to the weather forecast, the City of Raleigh has announced changes to its services. Solid Waste Services operations in the Central Business District will be altered on Saturday, January 11, due to the expected inclement weather. Businesses in this area will not receive service on Saturday, while Sunday collections will operate on a four-hour delay.
Additionally, the Yard Waste Center will close on Saturday to minimize hazards during adverse weather conditions but will resume normal operations on Monday at 7 a.m.
The City’s Transportation Department has begun brining efforts as of Thursday morning and will continue until 8 p.m., covering more than 840 lane miles throughout Raleigh. Residents are encouraged to take precautions such as preparing their vehicles for severe weather and ensuring pipes do not freeze.
