The Wake County tourism industry declined in the second quarter of 2020 due to the impacts of COVID-19, a report from the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau (Visit Raleigh) found.

“While the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted tourism and hospitality numbers, there is hope for the future,” Dennis Edwards, Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau president and CEO, said in the press release about the report on Aug. 6.

The Wake County Tourism Industry Data report found that the coronavirus has had a financial impact of approximately $118.5 million from the 225 conventions and other events that were canceled throughout Wake County. Some of that loss will be recouped through reschedulings, the reported noted, which should generate $19.6 million.

“Meeting planners and event organizers are still interested in the area and working with our team to reschedule events or book future business here in Wake County," Edwards said in the release. Planners are incredibly receptive to learning more about our destination and are still booking out as far as 2024 and beyond for future events."
