Former Miss USA and North Carolina native Cheslie Kryst recently died after jumping from a building in the Manhattan borough of New York City.
According to CNN News, the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Kryst died from suicide, and New York City police are investigating the circumstances of her death.
Before she died, Kryst posted a photo of herself on Instagram and wrote, "May this day bring you rest and peace."
"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Cheslie Kryst," U.S. Rep. G. K. Butterfield wrote in a Jan. 30 Twitter post. "North Carolina and this country have experienced a devastating loss. Cheslie will be remembered for her love of people and service to all. If you or anyone you know is thinking about suicide, is worried about a friend or loved one, or would like emotional support, please call the [American Foundation for Suicide Prevention] at 1-800-273-8255"
"In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie," Kryst's family said in a statement, according to CNN. "Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined."
Kryst was crowned Miss USA in 2019 and was a civil attorney who conducted free legal work for prisoners who may have been sentenced unjustly. She was also a correspondent for entertainment news program "Extra."
