City of Raleigh issued the following announcement on July 28.
The Raleigh Police Department believes the foundation for a safer community is to know your neighbors and your surroundings.
National Night Out is an effort to strengthen the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement.
The event, which is always on the first Tuesday in August, has been held annually across the country since 1984.
The Raleigh Police Department has supported National Night Out for more than 30 years.
This year National Night Out will be observed on Aug. 2. In observance of National Night Out, RPD asks you to leave your porch light on from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The porch light is a symbol of alertness and awareness; it makes your neighbors and friends feel welcome.
RPD also asks that you take time to get to know your neighbors better.
