Two raised crosswalks have been completed on St. Mary’s Street near Clay Street and Brooklyn Street, with final road pavement markings applied in February. This project began last year during the resurfacing of St. Mary’s and aims to enhance pedestrian safety.

Raised crosswalks are a traffic calming measure with several benefits. They help reduce vehicle speeds due to the ramp leading up to the crosswalk. The elevated height increases pedestrian visibility to drivers, and they are flush with the sidewalk, improving accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges such as those using strollers or wheelchairs.

Studies indicate that raised crosswalks can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 45%, significantly improving safety for everyone.

The crosswalks are located in a walkable area near Broughton High School, Fred Fletcher Park, a GoRaleigh bus stop, and downtown amenities, all contributing to high pedestrian traffic in the area.

This pilot project has been successful, prompting Vision Zero to plan similar measures at other locations throughout downtown. In collaboration with the Raleigh Fire Department, they have ensured that emergency vehicles can navigate the area effectively, further enhancing safety for all.

Vision Zero is a citywide initiative focused on reducing and ultimately eliminating serious injuries and fatalities in the transportation network while fostering safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all.
