Today, Governor Josh Stein and emergency management officials urged residents in western North Carolina to seek aid for repairing private roads and bridges. The call comes in the wake of Hurricane Helene, which inflicted severe damage on more than 8,000 private roads and bridges due to the region's distinct topography. This initiative aims to restore access to essential services such as emergency response, school transportation, and daily commutes.

"Helene caused significant damage to over 8,000 private roads and bridges that often serve as the only access route for many ambulances, fire trucks, mail delivery vehicles, school buses, and for people to get to school, work, and run errands," stated Governor Josh Stein. "If left unrepaired, these critical private roads and bridges pose a substantial risk to public safety, including preventing repairs to people’s homes. If you need bridge or road repair, I encourage you to apply through this portal."

Following the hurricane's impact on infrastructure like roads, culverts, pipes, and bridges across North Carolina, Governor Stein issued Executive Order #2 on January 2, 2025. This order authorized North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM) to provide state assistance through the newly established North Carolina Private Road and Bridge Program (NC-PRB).

Governor Stein has instructed NCEM to oversee the state's efforts in repairing these infrastructures while collaborating with legislators for additional funding support. NCEM is also working with vendors to expedite these repairs by setting up a webpage and interest form for property owners seeking assistance.

Additionally, disaster survivors are advised to reach out to the North Carolina Disaster Case Management Program for further resources related to their recovery process. More details can be found at www.ncdps.gov/helene/dcm.
