The U.S. House's education committee is progressing with an incremental strategy to modernize the Higher Education Act of 1965. This extensive legislation oversees federal financial aid programs and various other policies but has not undergone reauthorization since 2008.

"The process gained momentum on Wednesday as the committee deliberated a bill, marking the beginning of an initiative that mandates colleges and universities to disclose additional details about foreign gifts, under the threat of jeopardizing their access to federal financial aid", according to Inside Higher Ed. The bill, which progressed through the committee with predominantly partisan support, serves as the initial step in a series of proposed bills that would effectively reauthorize the Higher Education Act. Virginia Foxx, the Republican chair from North Carolina leading the committee, indicated in an interview more legislation aimed at reforming higher education is coming but refrained from providing specific details about them. Considering topics discussed in this year's committee hearings, upcoming bills are expected to address matters such as accreditation, expansion of Pell Grant to short-term programs, campus free speech, student aid system and accountability among others. "Reauthorizing this comprehensive law remains a key priority," Foxx said.

"Congress's foremost responsibility is safeguarding the nation from potential threats, necessitating robust support for our military through cutting-edge equipment and respectful treatment of our servicemen and women," was outlined in a report by Klobuchar Senate. Swift and accurate assessments of worldwide conflicts resulting in diplomatic or military responses or both are required to protect America in today's interconnected global landscape. Remaining vigilant against evolving security challenges like cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns and economic disruptions is essential. The need for deterrence against hostile actions from foreign nations and thwarting terrorist networks is paramount. Additionally, recognizing that foreign adversaries aiming to undermine our democratic processes pose a genuine threat to national security is essential.

According to BR Proud article by Johnson emphasizes that omitting funding requested by President Joe Biden for Israel, Ukraine and the U.S.-Mexico border from the bill "positions the conference optimally to advocate for fiscal responsibility, enhanced oversight of Ukraine aid and significant policy changes at the Southern border". While hardline conservatives typically resist temporary spending measures, they showed a willingness to grant Johnson some flexibility in passing a continuing resolution (CR). This CR allows Congress additional time to negotiate a comprehensive, long-term agreement.
