Thousands of spectators gathered at Lake Wheeler Park in Raleigh this past weekend for The Lake Wheeler Invitational. The event brought together women's rowing teams from eighteen colleges and universities for more than 40 races on the 650-acre lake.
The excitement in the air was palpable, with the sound of cowbells and cheering filling the park. As one attendee exclaimed, "Let’s row!"
Stephen Bentley, Parks Director, expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the event, stating, "Raleigh Parks is thrilled to host the Lake Wheeler Invitational and bring this national rowing event to the region." He also highlighted the partnership with UNC and Duke, aiming to make rowing more accessible to the community.
The recent eight-year agreement with the ACC, GRSA, Duke University, and UNC ensures that Lake Wheeler will continue to be a premier rowing destination, with upgrades to the facilities and annual hosting of the Lake Wheeler Invitational. Chris Murray, Lake Wheeler Park Manager, emphasized the growth potential of the event, noting, "The Invitational is a big event and it’s just going to continue to grow."
With five thousand spectators and athletes attending over two days, coupled with the new agreement, Lake Wheeler is poised to solidify its position on the rowing map.
