In a recent initiative, the City has been actively supporting affordable housing developments by providing land at little to no cost to affordable developers. This move is aimed at tackling the challenge posed by the high cost of land in housing projects.

According to a statement, "For most housing developments, the cost of land is one of the most expensive factors. The City offsets this cost by giving land at little or no cost to affordable developers." This strategy has been instrumental in creating more than 700 units of affordable housing, with the City contributing 20 sites since 2016.

The 2020 Affordable Housing Bond played a significant role in this endeavor by allocating $16 million to acquire land for affordable housing near transit locations. This funding has further facilitated the City's efforts in providing affordable housing options to its residents.

A key aspect of this initiative is the utilization of publicly-owned land to address the shortage of affordable housing. This approach not only helps in reducing costs for developers but also contributes to the overall goal of increasing the availability of affordable housing in the City.

To learn more about the City's approach to affordable housing and how public land is being leveraged for this purpose, individuals are encouraged to explore the resources available on the Affordable Housing 101 page. This includes informative videos and materials aimed at providing a better understanding of affordable housing and the strategies being implemented to address this pressing issue.
