Taxi rates in Raleigh have recently increased for the first time in 18 years. The City is responsible for setting the base fare and mileage rates for cab companies operating in the area. As of May 1, 2024, several changes have been implemented. The starting ride fee has been raised to $3 from $1.95, the per-mile rate has increased to $3 from $2.50, and the per-minute wait time fee has gone up to 30 cents from 25 cents.
In 2023, the Taxi Inspector's Office of the Raleigh Police Department conducted a review of Raleigh's taxi fee structure. This review included benchmarking taxi rates from across the state and country, as well as gathering feedback from taxi owners and drivers during informational meetings.
It is important to note that these changes will not impact rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft, distinguishing the adjustments as specific to traditional taxi services in Raleigh.
