The completion of a traffic signal upgrade at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Hollyridge Drive has been announced. The upgrades include protected left turn signals on Glenwood Avenue, crosswalks, pedestrian crossing signals, and wheelchair-accessible curb ramps. These improvements aim to enhance community safety and ease access to various destinations whether on foot, by transit, or in a car.
In 2022, a pedestrian lost their life while crossing Glenwood Avenue at this intersection. The newly installed crosswalk and pedestrian signals are intended to provide residents with safer means to cross Glenwood Avenue and reach bus stops, shopping centers, restaurants, and neighborhoods.
Over the past five years, this intersection has witnessed 32 crashes involving left turns from Glenwood Avenue, with 17 resulting in injuries to drivers or passengers. The new left turn signals will display a green arrow to indicate when it is safe for drivers to make a left turn. This feature is known as a protected left turn and is anticipated to prevent future crashes related to left turns.
The project was carried out in collaboration between Raleigh’s Vision Zero team and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Funding was provided through NCDOT’s Spot Safety program, with design and construction also handled by NCDOT.
