Raleigh, North Carolina is making significant strides in its climate action initiatives. The city has successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions below 2007 levels, despite considerable population growth. Between 2007 and 2022, the community witnessed a reduction of 21 percent in greenhouse gas emissions per person.
This information was shared by the Sustainability department as part of its Community Climate Action Plan implementation update at the City Council’s work session on Tuesday.
The Community Climate Action Plan of Raleigh has set ambitious goals. It aims to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050, address equity, environmental justice and community health, and build community resilience to the impacts of climate change.
The strategies under Raleigh’s Community Climate Action Plan focus on high-impact climate action in categories such as transportation and land use, buildings and energy, and resilience and cross-cutting measures.
“The successes we are seeing are the result of the collaboration of several City departments and community partnerships,” said Megan Anderson, Sustainability Director. “We are proud of everyone in the community for taking action to slow climate change, address equity and community health, and to continue to build our community resilience to climate impacts in Raleigh.”
Further details about the city's ongoing climate actions will be available soon in the forthcoming 2024 Community Climate Action Plan Implementation Report.
