The Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center is inviting applications for its next 911 Training Academy, which will run from July 8 to August 4, 2024. The academy, lasting between 12 and 14 weeks, is scheduled to commence on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Interested candidates can access the application form now.
Applicants whose submissions meet the initial criteria will be asked to complete an employment skills test using CritiCall software. This test evaluates various job-related skills such as data entry, typing speed and accuracy, spelling, and reading comprehension.
Candidates who pass the skills test will participate in a virtual interview with a panel. Those recommended by the panel will then undergo a psychological evaluation and must pass a criminal background check along with other required steps.
During the training academy, trainees will receive basic training to become call takers or telecommunicators. They will be compensated during their training period; call takers have an annual salary of $41,203 while telecommunicators earn $44,358 annually. The job responsibilities include answering emergency (911), non-emergency, and administrative calls. Trainees are also responsible for collecting necessary information from callers and entering it into a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
The Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center provides services to over 1.19 million residents.
To provide more information about the academy, three public sessions will be held via Microsoft Teams:
- Session 1: Monday, July 29 at 7 p.m.
- Session 2: Wednesday, July 31 at 11 a.m.
