The Raleigh Police Department (RPD) recently launched a new Civilian Traffic Investigator Unit. The unit responds to and processes data from crashes involving property damage on Raleigh streets, highways, and parking areas. This initiative allows sworn officers to concentrate on other priority calls.
In May, RPD responded to more than 1,800 calls involving crashes. In June, officers responded to 1,700 crashes, resulting in an average of 55.5 daily crashes. This approach to crash investigations aims to help RPD respond more efficiently and effectively for the nearly 500,000 Raleigh residents.
"Having this new unit in the Raleigh Police Department will greatly help many of our officers! In the 15 years I’ve been with RPD, we have always talked about focusing efforts on higher-priority incidents and how some traffic-related calls could stretch out our day. This new unit allows us that extra time to do just that. I speak for all of the officers when I say it’s exciting having them on board," said Sergeant E. Reeves.
The unit comprises three full-time and four part-time RPD employees and will operate with two full shifts, ensuring prompt responses.
The members of this unit completed six weeks of intensive training on proper procedures.
