The busy intersection of Glenwood Avenue has undergone significant upgrades to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The project includes new crosswalks, pedestrian crossing signals, wheelchair-accessible curb ramps, and additional traffic signal heads.
According to the Raleigh Transportation Department, "This project will make it safer and easier to access destinations on foot, by transit, or in a car." The improvements are expected to facilitate safer crossings for residents accessing bus stops, shopping centers, and neighborhoods. Pedestrians can now use the crosswalk by pressing a button and waiting for the “walk” symbol before crossing.
In addition to these enhancements, an extra traffic signal head has been installed in each direction on Glenwood Avenue. This measure aims to increase the visibility of red lights and reduce crashes caused by red light running. A new left turn signal on eastbound Fairhill Drive has also been introduced. It will display a green arrow when there is high demand for left turns and flash yellow at other times.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the City of Raleigh and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The need for this project was identified by Raleigh's Vision Zero team. NCDOT was responsible for funding, designing, and constructing the improvements. Raleigh's Vision Zero program seeks to eliminate fatalities on roadways.
