Just over one year ago, a new traffic signal was installed at the intersection of Country Trail and Pinecrest Road. This project aimed to enhance safety and accessibility for both motorists and pedestrians.
The traffic signal was introduced in response to a pattern of crashes at the intersection. Over five years, there were 13 crashes that could have been prevented by a signal. Most were angle crashes, also known as “T-bone” crashes, occurring when vehicles on Country Trail pulled out in front of vehicles traveling on Pinecrest Road. Since the installation of the traffic signal, no angle crashes have been reported.
Additionally, new crosswalks and pedestrian signals have been installed to facilitate safer crossings for residents across Country Trail and Pinecrest Road. These improvements are expected to enhance access to neighborhoods, parks, and schools. The curb ramps have been rebuilt to be wheelchair accessible. To use the crosswalk, pedestrians need to press the button and wait for the “walk” symbol before crossing.
This project is a result of collaboration between the City of Raleigh and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Raleigh's Vision Zero team identified the need for this initiative, while NCDOT funded, designed, and constructed it. Raleigh's Vision Zero program aims to eliminate fatalities on roadways.
