A range of traffic and pedestrian safety improvement projects are currently in planning, design, or construction phases. These enhancements aim to make roads safer for children, parents, and school staff.

Wildwood Forest Elementary will undergo several upgrades starting Fall 2024, including new speed humps, all-way stops, high-visibility crosswalks, a concrete refuge island, and two strategic sidewalk extensions. Stough Elementary will see the installation of Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) at the Mill Village/Edwards Mill/Parklake signal with construction set to begin in late Fall 2024.

At Riverbend Elementary, a new signalized intersection is under active construction to improve traffic flow and enhance student safety. Additionally, two intersections near Wakefield Middle School and High School—Schoolhouse St at Wakefield Pines Dr and Mabry Mill St at Wakefield Pines Dr—are in the final stages of design and easement acquisition. Construction on new traffic signals is expected to start soon.

Several schools will see the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at existing crosswalks beginning Fall 2024 for Martin Middle, Grace Christian, and Cardinal Gibbons High. Oberlin Middle, Conn Elementary, and Riverbend Middle (Perry Creek Rd at Beardall St.) will receive RRFBs by Winter 2025. Jeffreys Grove Elementary and Lacy Elementary will also have RRFBs installed by Winter 2025.

Future upgrades include new signalized intersections for Dillard Middle and Harris Creek Elementary with construction anticipated to start in late 2025 or early 2026. A federally funded project will bring comprehensive pedestrian and traffic safety improvements along Martin Luther King Blvd for Ligon Middle & Poe Elementary by early 2026.

In the past year, Carroll Middle, River Oak Middle, Athens Drive High, and East Millbrook Middle have received new streetlight improvements to enhance visibility.

As these projects progress, everyone—students, parents, and drivers—is encouraged to stay alert and adhere to traffic safety guidelines. New signs, signals, and road markings should be closely observed to ensure a safe start to the school year.
