Raleigh Solid Waste Services provides two services to help residents dispose of items too large for city-issued curbside carts.
The Bulky Load request is intended for specific items that can be taken to the landfill but are too large for the standard garbage cart. Customers are entitled to one free pickup every 90 days, subject to load limits and item qualifications.
For larger items such as appliances and furniture that do not qualify for a Bulky Load pickup, residents can use the Special Collection request. This service incurs a fee for every four cubic yards collected, which is approximately equivalent to four standard-size washing machines or two refrigerators.
Residents unsure whether an item qualifies as a Bulky Load or requires a Special Collection can use the Raleigh Reuse Waste Wizard tool. This tool provides detailed information to help determine load classification and offers alternative disposal options like local donation centers. To schedule a pickup service, residents should call Customer Support at 919-996-3245.
The Raleigh Reuse Waste Wizard is also accessible on mobile devices through the free Raleigh Reuse App, available from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
