On October 22, the Carolina Hurricanes faced a critical moment in their season during a game against the Edmonton Oilers. The team was trailing 2-0 after two periods and had not been able to score against goaltender Stuart Skinner with their first 22 shots. Coach Rod Brind'Amour decided to change the forward lines, moving Jack Roslovic to play alongside Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov. This shift resulted in Roslovic scoring seven goals in his next seven games.
Eric Robinson took Roslovic's place alongside Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Martin Necas. In the third period, Necas and Robinson collaborated on a goal that tied the game, eventually leading to an overtime win secured by Necas assisting Aho for the game-winner. This victory marked the beginning of an eight-game winning streak for the Hurricanes.
Since that pivotal night in Edmonton, Martin Necas has recorded points in 13 consecutive games, contributing significantly to the team's success. The Hurricanes now stand at 13-4-0 for the season.
"He's certainly driving the ship for us," said Brind'Amour about Necas following a recent victory where Necas achieved his second four-point night of the season.
Necas attributes his success to increased confidence and good decisions with puck handling. "I put up a great summer," he explained, noting how winning a gold medal with Czechia at the IIHF World Championship boosted his confidence further.
Currently third among NHL skaters with 30 points, Necas feels confident and aims to maintain this momentum. "Obviously when things are going your way, you're in the zone," he stated.
Communication is also key for his line with Kotkaniemi and Robinson. "We know our role(s) on the line," said Necas about their chemistry after playing together for almost 15 games.
Robinson's speed has helped create opportunities for Necas as well. "He's just so fast and he creates space for me," praised Necas regarding Robinson's contributions both on and off the ice.
As they prepare for upcoming divisional road contests starting Wednesday in Philadelphia, Necas remains focused on sustaining this positive trend throughout what is anticipated to be a long NHL season.
“Obviously it feels better than what I’ve been used to," remarked Necas about his current form while acknowledging teamwork as crucial to their success thus far.
