Today, Governor Josh Stein joined the African American Heritage Commission and the Legislative Black Caucus in celebrating Black entrepreneurs during a Black History Month reception.

Governor Stein highlighted the significant impact of Black North Carolinians on the state's history. “Black North Carolinians have shaped our state for as long as it has existed. They have made an indelible mark on North Carolina’s history, strengthening our politics and the law, arts and culture, education and business,” he stated. He also emphasized his commitment to fostering opportunities for Black entrepreneurship to flourish.

Dr. Valerie Johnson, Chair of the NC African American Heritage Commission, expressed pride in commemorating Black History Month with Governor Stein. She remarked on the enduring contributions of Black North Carolinians to various aspects of state life. “I applaud the Governor’s dedication to uplifting Black entrepreneurs’ voices and urge our state to recognize that when our business leaders win, we all win,” Dr. Johnson said.

Senator Kandie Smith, Chair of the NC Legislative Black Caucus, noted North Carolina's strong reputation for business and acknowledged the growing presence of Black entrepreneurs in the state. "However, there is still much work to be done," she added. "As leaders, we must uplift one another and support all North Carolinians in pursuing their dreams of owning a small business.”

Governor Stein annually acknowledges African-Americans' contributions to North Carolina's past and future. This year he honored Black entrepreneurs for their role in creating economic opportunities and strengthening communities. During the event, he also presented a proclamation declaring February as Black History Month.
