Pathologist Dr. Joe Grisham remembered for leadership and mentorship

Dr. Joe Grisham, a former Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, passed away on January 29, 2025, in Tennessee. Dr. Grisham led the department from 1973 to 1999 and played a key role in its development alongside Dr. Bill McLendon.

During his career, Dr. Grisham made significant contributions to liver pathology research, particularly in NIH-funded studies on liver regeneration and stem cells. His work earned him several awards, including the Gold-Headed Cane Award from the American Society of Investigative Pathology in 2002.

Beyond his research and leadership roles, Dr. Grisham was known for his mentorship. In 1987, he advised Dr. David Walker with a guiding principle: “There’s only one. Put the effort to develop your faculty members’ career above all else.”

Dr. Grisham's legacy includes his dedication to research excellence and mentorship, leaving an enduring impact on future generations in the field of pathology.
