The Crime Victim Compensation Commission has approved $446,169 in financial reimbursements for victims of violent crime in North Carolina. This decision was made during the commission's quarterly meeting on Monday. The funds are intended to cover eligible medical costs, lost wages, or other expenses resulting from crimes committed within the state.
The six-member commission reviews claims recommended by staff at the N.C. Department of Public Safety’s Office of Victim Compensation Services. Liddie Shropshire, Director of VCS, stated: “These reimbursements do not erase the trauma and grief that victims of crime and their families experience. But this financial aid can help ease the financial burden of services needed following an assault, homicide or other violent crime.”
Each month, the Office of Victim Compensation Services receives over 300 applications for assistance. Staff investigators assess eligibility and must refer claims exceeding $12,500 to the commission for approval before processing reimbursements.
In 2024 alone, North Carolina’s Victim Compensation Program distributed $9.8 million in reimbursements to more than 2,400 applicants.
