FEMA has approved an extension for state, tribal, and local governments, as well as certain non-profit organizations, to apply for its Public Assistance program. The new deadline is set for April 7, 2025. Governor Josh Stein expressed gratitude towards FEMA and the Trump Administration for this extension.

“I am grateful to FEMA and the Trump Administration for granting our request to extend the deadline to apply for this critical program,” said Governor Josh Stein. “Communities across North Carolina are in need of increased federal resources to remove debris and restore public facilities, and public assistance grants have been critical to their local recovery. I encourage city and county governments and non-profits to seize the moment and apply for these grants.”

The FEMA Public Assistance program offers reimbursement cost share funding aimed at helping state, local, tribal units, and some non-profit organizations manage costs related to responding to Tropical Storm Helene.

Eligible entities in several counties including Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe among others may apply if they have uninsured losses from Tropical Storm Helene. This also includes the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Governor Stein recently visited Yancey County where he met with officials and residents affected by Hurricane Helene. In February, he announced an additional $19 billion in federal funds intended for infrastructure restoration and disaster impact reduction. He also encouraged participation in finalizing an Action Plan related to a $1.4 billion award from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Governments and non-profits can proceed with applications online while disaster survivors seeking assistance can continue applying through FEMA's platform.
