Duke Energy Foundation has announced a significant investment in North Carolina's community colleges, providing $500,000 to support 19 programs aimed at developing a skilled workforce for the energy industry. An additional $100,000 will be allocated to the Forward Fund to aid students in Southeastern North Carolina in securing high-wage jobs.
As North Carolina expands its modern energy infrastructure, Duke Energy is focusing on creating opportunities for training and job skills tailored to community needs. The company's commitment to workforce development has reached over $6.6 million over the past five years.
Kendal Bowman, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president, stated: “As our state and industry continue to grow, North Carolina’s community colleges are helping us meet the moment. As technologies change and we modernize our energy fleet, we want talent here in the state to help us support our communities and build a smarter energy future for customers.”
Among the beneficiaries is Durham Technical Community College, which received $25,000 to enhance its Electric Line Technician Training program. J.B. Buxton, President of Durham Technical Community College, remarked: “Duke Energy’s continued commitment to Durham Tech ensures we are connecting skilled individuals to good jobs like electric line technicians.”
For the first time, an investment is being made in the Forward Fund (TFF), which offers zero-interest loans covering essential expenses such as transportation and child care. This allows students enrolled in short-term training programs connected to regional employer demand to focus on their education full-time.
Meaghan Dennis, founder and CEO of TFF, expressed enthusiasm about the grant: "The Forward Fund is thrilled to receive this grant from Duke Energy Foundation to expand access of our customized, student-centered financing...We're excited to be part of the workforce solution for high-wage energy careers in the state."
Duke Energy Foundation annually provides over $30 million in philanthropic support within communities served by Duke Energy. Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) is among America’s largest energy holding companies with extensive electric and natural gas utilities across several states.
