The Black Cove Complex in Polk and Henderson counties is currently being managed by more than 500 personnel from North Carolina and other states. The conditions for the fire's progression remain concerning, as a Red Flag Warning has been issued due to high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds, which could facilitate the fires spreading. There is hope, however, as rain is forecasted along with a cold front expected to move through the region early next week.

Firefighting efforts are challenged by debris and timber damage left by Hurricane Helene, especially due to the reduced tree canopy that allows more sunlight to dry out ground fuel.

The Black Cove Fire, which spans 3,288 acres and is currently 17% contained, is burning timber on state-owned and private land near Saluda in the Green River Gorge. Strong winds and dry conditions are causing intense fire behavior, with efforts ongoing to secure the southwestern perimeter to protect nearby homes. The fire originated from a downed powerline and was first reported on March 19.

The Deep Woods Fire, covering 3,373 acres and 30% contained, is located about 5 miles northwest of Columbus. It is burning on both state-owned and private land. Firefighters have utilized bulldozer and hand lines to protect homes near Green River Road. The cause of this fire is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, the Fish Hook Fire is largely contained at 95% with a size of 199 acres, burning near Lake Adger. Firefighting personnel have halted its forward progress, and containment is expected to improve shortly.

A community meeting was held in Saluda on March 27, where updates on these fires were provided by fire managers and emergency officials. The meeting was recorded and will be posted on Saluda's website for those unable to attend.

Evacuations are being reassessed based on fire activity and updates are available on the websites for Polk and Henderson counties. A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in effect to facilitate airborne firefighting operations without interference from drones.

Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency on March 26 to bolster resources for handling the fires. A ban on all open burning has been issued statewide effective from March 21, cancelling all current burning permits with no new permits being issued.
