The Black Cove Complex fires spanning Polk and Henderson counties continue to challenge firefighting efforts. The complex, covering a total of 7,670 acres, includes three main areas: Black Cove at 3,501 acres, Deep Woods at 3,970 acres, and Fish Hook at 199 acres. Current containment levels stand at 35% for Black Cove, 32% for Deep Woods, and Fish Hook is fully contained.

The cause of the Black Cove and Fish Hook fires has been identified as powerline-related, while the cause of the Deep Woods fire remains under investigation. Recent favorable weather conditions, including increased humidity and the prospects of rain, have helped reduce fire activity, allowing crews to focus more effectively on containment strategies, including mopping up and patrols of hot spots.

An altitude-limited Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been enforced to support firefighting operations. The ban extends up to 5,500 feet and restricts drone use to prevent interference with aircraft supporting ground personnel. Violations could jeopardize the safety of both pilots and residents.

Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency on March 26 to enhance the response capabilities for the ongoing wildfires in Western North Carolina. Accompanying this measure, a statewide ban on open burning was instituted on March 21, canceling all existing permits.
