Governor Josh Stein and North Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley are urging employers in North Carolina to hire veterans and seek recognition through the HIRE Vets Medallion Program. This program is an initiative by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Governor Stein highlighted, “North Carolina is home to approximately 700,000 veterans, who bring great skills and experience to our state’s workforce. The HIRE Vets program recognizes companies for their support for our nation’s heroes, cementing North Carolina’s position as the most military-friendly state.”

These medallions are the only federal awards for veteran employment. Last year, 28 employers in North Carolina received this recognition. The local Department of Commerce has created an online tool on the NCWorks platform, showing employers who have earned the medallion to help veterans find potential job openings.

“North Carolina’s military community is one of our state’s strategic assets, and we applaud the many employers who recognize the talent, value and unique perspective that our veterans provide,” said Lilley. “By recruiting and training veterans for meaningful employment opportunities, companies assist in the transition to civilian life and honor the sacrifice of military service.”

Secretary Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette of the NC DMVA stated, “Veterans and their families enrich North Carolina communities and provide a ready and skilled workforce that is second to none.” She emphasized that economic impact and meaningful employment are significant benefits of engaging veterans in the workforce.

The HIRE Vets Medallion Award considers multiple criteria related to hiring and retaining veterans, as well as providing resources and programming tailored to their needs. Application fees vary by company size.

Among recognized employers is Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministries (ABCCM) through Veterans Services of the Carolinas. Jessica Rice, Managing Director, remarked, "At ABCCM Veterans Services of the Carolinas, we are deeply committed to empowering and supporting our nation’s Veterans as they transition into meaningful careers."

NCWorks Veterans Services professionals, all veterans themselves, work to help veterans and employers in job matching and training. These services are part of a grant program from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Applications for the HIRE Vets Medallion Program are open until April 30, 2025. Employers and veterans can find more information or apply at www.HireVets.gov or visit NCWorks Career Centers.
