The North Carolina Source Water Collaborative, a protection group dedicated to safeguarding drinking water across the state, announced the recipients of the Source Water Protection Awards. The announcement occurred during the Water Resources Research Institute’s annual conference last month.
These awards are part of an annual program that acknowledges individuals and organizations committed to protecting sources of public drinking water. Eligible candidates include any individual, group, organization, or agency involved in activities aimed at maintaining the quality of drinking water at its source.
This year's Source Water Protection Awards were presented in two categories. The Education and Leadership Award went to Cape Fear River Watch for their efforts in PFAS advocacy and litter cleanup. Meanwhile, the Education Award was awarded to Jessica Janc for her work as the High Country Program Director, particularly in relation to Collaborative Educational Programs.
The leadership for the North Carolina Source Water Collaborative is provided by the Department of Environmental Quality. This collaborative consists of volunteers from various sectors, including non-profit organizations, universities, as well as state, local, and federal agencies. They also include professional associations and regional councils of government.
The group's mission is to develop and promote strategies that focus on preserving natural water sources such as lakes, streams, rivers, and aquifers, and the land that aids in protecting and recharging these water sources.
