Thanksgiving ushered in a new reason for giving thanks for Matthew Huber who turned a $1 chance on a lottery ticket into more than a million dollars.

“I thought I was still recovering from stuffing myself at Thanksgiving dinner,” Huber said when he picked up his winnings. “I had to check twice.”

The Raleigh man bought the ticket online before sitting down for his family Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday.

“We don’t really play a lot, but we saw the Cash 5 jackpot going higher,” he said. It reached the point where he thought it was worth taking a chance.

That $1 ticket turned into $1,860,203

Huber’s win was the third-highest jackpot in the history of the Cash 5 jackpot game, according to a news release from North Carolina Education Lottery officials.

Huber said he was stunned when he received an email alert Friday telling him he won.

“It was mind-blowing,” he said in the N.C. Education Lottery’s release. “I thought, ‘oh my gosh!’ and then I called my wife over to look. It is something you never expect to see but hope to see. It’s phenomenal — the best Thanksgiving.”

Huber went to the lottery headquarters office in Raleigh Monday to collect his prize, which came to $1,320,934 after taxes were withheld. He said he plans to save and invest the bulk of his winnings, so he’ll be better able to help others in the future.
