Fire crews from North Carolina and 14 additional states are actively battling the fires in the Black Cove Complex in Polk and Henderson Counties. There are 458 personnel currently involved in the firefighting operations.
The high humidity and reduced winds overnight have helped firefighters contain the fire more effectively, with smoke output minimal in many areas.
The Black Cove Fire, originating near Saluda in the Green River Gorge, now spans 3,410 acres and is 23% contained. Efforts are being made to repair damages caused by firefighting activities in the area. The fire was first reported on March 19, and a downed power line has been identified as the cause.
The Deep Woods Fire covers 3,797 acres and is 32% contained in an area near Columbus. A strategic firing operation was safely conducted around Holbert Cove Road to suppress the fire. The fire also reported on March 19, remains under investigation for its cause.
The Fish Hook Fire near Mill Spring is 199 acres in size, with containment at 95%. This fire is on private land near Lake Adger. It started on March 20 and was caused by a power line issue. The forward spread of the fire has been halted.
Evacuation levels are under ongoing review. Updated notices are available on the websites of Polk and Henderson Counties. A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in place to safeguard firefighting operations. Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency on March 26 to enhance response capabilities. Since March 21, there has been a statewide ban on open burning.
