Raleigh is making strides towards a sustainable future by promoting renewable energy and embracing innovative sustainability initiatives. Through programs such as Solarize the Triangle, expanded electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, and e-bike adoption, the city is enhancing accessibility to renewable energy for both residents and businesses. This commitment is reflected in ongoing investments in solar energy, electric mobility, and sustainable infrastructure, which support climate action, reduce carbon emissions, and promote clean energy. These efforts not only benefit the environment but also improve living standards in Raleigh.
In 2024, three BEAM chargers, independent solar-powered EV charging stations, were installed by Raleigh, providing clean energy without needing grid connections. Located in city parks, these stations offer sustainable and resilient charging solutions for EV owners and underscore the city's dedication to sustainability. The BEAM chargers are a part of Raleigh’s efforts to eliminate dependence on fossil fuels.
The Solarize the Triangle program aims to make solar energy more affordable through bulk purchasing and community involvement, offering reduced rates for solar panel installations. In its initial phase from 2022 to 2023, the program achieved milestones including 321 contracts signed, $570,607 in annual utility bill savings, and the installation of 3,155.3 kilowatts of new clean energy capacity. Currently, the city is utilizing federal funds to subsidize solar systems for residents with low-to-moderate incomes.
To encourage more sustainable transportation, Raleigh launched a rebate program for e-bikes, providing financial incentives for residents buying new e-bikes, with larger discounts available to lower-income applicants. With additional funding secured in early 2025, the program has expanded to allow greater access to eco-friendly transportation. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote bike-friendly infrastructure and clean, energy-efficient mobility.
The month of April marks Earth Month, celebrated under the theme #OurPowerOurPlanet, highlighting Raleigh's ongoing climate action efforts. Citizens are encouraged to amplify climate solutions, learn about city sustainability initiatives, and incorporate climate-friendly actions in daily life. Further details on these initiatives can be found on the Community Climate Action Data Dashboard.
