Firefighters have made significant progress in combating the Black Cove Complex fires in Polk and Henderson counties. Spanning a total of 7,680 acres, the fires encompass the Black Cove, Deep Woods, and Fish Hook areas. As of the latest reports, containment levels stand at 97% for the Black Cove fire, 63% for the Deep Woods fire, and 100% for the Fish Hook fire.

The cause of the fires has been identified as powerline issues for the Black Cove and Fish Hook fires, while the cause of the Deep Woods fire remains under investigation.

So far, 34 engines and 393 total personnel have been deployed to manage the situation. Recent favorable weather conditions have aided firefighters in pinpointing and extinguishing remaining smoke sources. As progress continues and the necessity of resources diminishes, units are gradually being released to their home bases.

In response to these wildfires, Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency on March 26 to enhance the state’s response capabilities.
