Brady Chan, 12, decided to help nonprofit Cure SMA by holding a bake sale, but he was not expecting a $60,000 gift for his cause.
"At first, I was like, six, that's 60,000? Cool,” Chan of Cary, told WTVD. “And then I realized that is like a ton of money. I was like, oh, wow! I was really excited and happy because that's like that could help a lot of people.”
He had hoped to sell enough homemade goodies to raise $600 for the nonprofit that provides support and research for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
SMA affects approximately one in every 11,000 births in the U.S., according to Cure SMA, and Chan was diagnosed at 18 months with the rare genetic disease that affects motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and weakens muscles.
As he was ready to clean up his stand Sunday, Chan said, he was feeling pretty good about his efforts as he had collected about $1,900. Then a neighbor, who wishes to remain anonymous, stopped by and dropped off the biggest surprise.
Chan's mom, Mimi, said the $60,000 donation brought her to tears.
“As a family that has been on the receiving end of living with spinal muscular atrophy, $60,000 can help so many families,” she said. “Sorry, I did not mean to let the tears out, but it's huge. It will help so many families.”
