The Environmental Lecture Series is back with another exciting virtual event, happening on the 8th of January. This month's topic will delve into the fascinating world of Purple Martins in North Carolina.
Purple martins, the largest members of the swallow family, are a unique songbird that relies on humans to provide their colonial nest sites. In this lecture, professionals and graduate students will explore the biology of purple martins, their nesting requirements, colony management, and the challenges they face for survival.
The lecture will also highlight the importance of citizen science, research, and volunteer opportunities that allow individuals to work with purple martins. Participants will have the chance to take a virtual tour of some public colony sites in Wake County, gaining a new understanding and appreciation for these lovely songsters and their special relationship with people.
