Celebrate Raleigh's rich black history by embarking on a special tour that will take you to several unique locations. One of the highlights of this tour is the Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope House, which stands as the only African American house museum in the state of North Carolina. This historical gem offers visitors a glimpse into the life of one of Raleigh's most intriguing citizens. With its original furnishings and a vast collection of historical artifacts, the Pope House provides valuable insight into the remarkable man and his family.

Another significant stop on this tour is Shaw University, the first historically Black institution of higher education in the South and one of the oldest in the nation. This prestigious university holds a special place in history as the first college in North Carolina to offer a four-year medical school. Additionally, Shaw University proudly opened its doors to women, making it the first historically Black college in the nation to do so. The tour includes a step-on guide who will provide valuable information about the university's rich heritage. To make the experience even more memorable, lunch will be served at Shaw University.

The tour will start at the Anne Gordon Center, located at 1901 Spring Forest Road, at 10:15 a.m. and is expected to return around 3:30 p.m. This excursion is open to older adults, and the cost is $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents.
