Raleigh third-grade student Levi emphasizes the importance of finding alternative means of transportation to live sustainably. Levi shared, "In our family, we try to walk to run errands when they are close by and we know we don’t need to carry much home."

Transportation stands as the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions in Raleigh and other U.S. cities. Opting for eco-friendly modes of travel can significantly impact reducing emissions. Walking, biking, or using a scooter for short distances not only decreases carbon footprint but also promotes better physical and mental health.

For longer journeys, carpooling with neighbors heading to the same destination can be a practical solution. Additionally, consolidating errands to minimize driving trips is another way individuals can contribute to sustainability efforts. Levi's family exemplifies these practices by choosing to walk for nearby errands.

Taking the bus is highlighted as a commendable low-carbon emission transportation option. The City of Raleigh's GoRaleigh bus system continues to expand, featuring buses running on compressed natural gas and electric buses. These initiatives aim to cut down air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the city's commitment to adopting cleaner fuels.

Raleigh is at the forefront of environmentally friendly transportation with ongoing projects like the bus rapid transit (BRT) system. Scheduled to commence operation in the near future, the BRT system will offer faster commute options, with buses running on renewable natural gas sourced from the community's wastewater.

The city's efforts in enhancing bus services and transitioning to renewable energy sources align with Raleigh's Community Climate Action Plan. This plan targets an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, emphasizing equity in climate action. By following Levi's example and exploring sustainable transportation options, individuals can actively contribute to these collective environmental goals.
