The City of Raleigh is launching a new pilot program in downtown Raleigh on April 17, introducing two high-capacity containers for collecting mixed recyclables and flattened cardboard. These new TRAC bins (Trash, Recycling, and Cardboard) will be placed in parklets, converted parking spaces, instead of on sidewalks, addressing issues related to sidewalk access and aesthetics.

Ashley Christensen, owner of AC Restaurants, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "Our restaurants are honored to participate in this exciting pilot program." She believes that the project will lead to a more visually pleasing and collaborative waste collection solution for downtown businesses, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and healthier city environment.

The pilot program will initially operate for 30 days, with Ashley Christensen's businesses, Beasley's and Fox Liquor Bar, being the first to utilize the new TRAC bins. The containers have a significant capacity, with each TRAC bin holding the equivalent of 5 1/2 solid waste carts. Solid Waste Services will monitor the tonnage collected weekly to assess the pilot's effectiveness.

In preparation for the pilot, extensive outreach and communication efforts were conducted by the Downtown Raleigh Alliance to engage the business community. Information sessions were held, and participating businesses received educational materials and support to ensure a smooth transition to the new collection system.

Additionally, a partnership between Raleigh Arts, Transportation, and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance will see the parklet exteriors wrapped in artwork by local artist Max Dowdle, adding a creative touch to the project.

Various city departments and organizations have collaborated to bring this pilot project to fruition, with a focus on supporting and engaging with the businesses involved. Data will be collected and evaluated to determine the success of the initiative before potential expansion to additional businesses in phase two of the pilot.
