The City of Raleigh's Information Technology Department is set to host GIS Day on November 21, 2024, at Raleigh Union Station from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The event aims to highlight the role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in addressing everyday challenges faced by state and local governments and will feature interactive demos and hands-on learning opportunities.
This free event is open to the public and is designed for anyone interested in understanding the significant impact of GIS on the community. Attendees will have the chance to learn how GIS technology is applied to solve various problems and how it integrates with other advanced technologies.
Those interested in presenting or hosting a table at the event are encouraged to contact organizers via email at gisday@raleighnc.gov.
A key feature of this year's celebration is an original map competition open to students. To qualify, submissions must be original works, standard size (not exceeding 34” x 44”), printed horizontally (landscape view), accompanied by a digital version (.pdf, .jpg, .png), and contain elements generated using GIS-based methods.
Participants should complete a submission form by Wednesday, November 14, and bring their printed maps to Raleigh Union Station on the day of the event. For those needing printing assistance, support is available through gisday@raleighnc.gov.
All eligible maps will be displayed during the celebration on November 21. The winning map will be determined by attendee votes based on quality, content, and creativity.
