The New York Rangers mounted a comeback against the Carolina Hurricanes, scoring four goals in the third period to secure a victory. The Hurricanes had maintained a "one day at a time" approach throughout the series and used the same lineup that led them to success in previous games.
In the first period, although New York dominated play, they managed only three shots. Carolina's Jordan Martinook set up Martin Necas for a goal, giving the Canes an early lead. Despite leading, Carolina needed adjustments before returning for the second period.
Carolina found their first insurance goal through Seth Jarvis during a power play. However, New York responded with Vincent Trocheck scoring after a Carolina turnover. Sebastian Aho then extended Carolina's lead to 3-1 with a quick transition goal.
New York's Mika Zibanejad initiated their comeback with Chris Kreider capitalizing on an untimely rebound to score. Kreider later tied the game and completed his hat trick in under nine minutes, securing New York's victory. Barclay Goodrow added an empty-net goal to conclude the match.
Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour reflected on the loss: "That (second) goal was a tough one... You can't give a team like that a goal and I thought we gave them a couple."
Jordan Staal commented on his penalty: "It's tough timing for a penalty... A big kill there probably would've changed the momentum for us."
Goalie Frederik Andersen admitted his mistake: "You don't want to give them life... Tough timing for that."
The Hurricanes' postseason run ends as they look ahead to changes next season.
