Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced that Martin Necas will join Czechia's roster for the 2024 IIHF World Championship. The tournament is currently taking place in Prague and will conclude on May 26.
Necas, aged 25, achieved 53 points with 24 goals and 29 assists over 77 regular-season games with the Hurricanes during the 2023-24 season. He also reached a career-high nine points in playoff games, scoring four goals and providing five assists across 11 matches. In terms of performance, Necas ranked fourth on his team for goals scored and tied for third in total points during the regular season. His postseason goal tally was among the highest for Hurricanes players.
Over his NHL career with Carolina, Necas has accumulated a total of 243 points from 97 goals and 146 assists in 362 games. Hailing from Nove Mesto na Morave in Czechia, he has previously represented his country at various international events. This includes participating in the 2018 IIHF World Championship as well as three IIHF World Junior Championships between 2017 and 2019.
In past international appearances, Necas recorded five points at the 2018 IIHF World Championship and was among the top point-scorers at the same year's World Junior Championship. He captained Czechia at both the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2016, where he led his team to a gold medal victory.
Necas entered professional hockey when selected by Carolina as their first-round pick, twelfth overall, during the NHL Draft of 2017.
"This Marty Necas assist is just silly," tweeted by Carolina Hurricanes (@Canes).
