The New York Rangers took a 2-0 lead in their series against the Carolina Hurricanes after a dramatic double-overtime victory on Tuesday. Vincent Trocheck scored the decisive goal, taking advantage of a power play opportunity.

Carolina's coach Rod Brind'Amour made changes to his lineup for Game 2, replacing Evgeny Kuznetsov with Max Comtois. This adjustment allowed Jesperi Kotkaniemi to return to his natural center position. Despite these changes, the Hurricanes fell behind early when Alexis Lafrenière scored for the Rangers.

The Hurricanes responded with two goals late in the first period. Jake Guentzel redirected a shot from Sebastian Aho, and Dmitry Orlov tipped in a Brady Skjei attempt, giving Carolina a temporary lead.

New York equalized in the second period through Lafrenière again, assisted by Adam Fox. The Rangers dominated parts of this period but Carolina regained the lead with another goal from Guentzel.

The third period saw Chris Kreider score for New York on one of their numerous power plays, tying the game at 3-3. Both teams had chances to win during regulation and overtime periods but failed to capitalize until Trocheck's winner.

Post-game reactions from Carolina reflected frustration over missed opportunities on special teams. Jordan Staal emphasized the need for better execution on both penalty kills and power plays: "There's not much else there to talk about, really... It's going to sting, but we've got to find a way to get it done at home."

Jake Guentzel highlighted similar issues: "We've got to buckle down on the power play and find a way to get one there." Coach Brind'Amour noted improvements needed: "We've got to be sharper (on the power play)."

The Hurricanes will return home for practice before Game 4 scheduled for Thursday.
