Raleigh City Council has approved two initiatives aimed at increasing accessible and affordable housing in the city.
On September 19, 2023, the council authorized up to $6 million for purchasing land on Kent Road. The intention is to lease this land to Blue Ridge Atlantic (also known as BRAD Parkside Apartments LLC) for developing 144 affordable housing units. The city will retain ownership of the land and lease it to the developer for up to 85 years at a nominal rate of $10 per year. This arrangement aims to keep the units affordable over time.
Final authorization for this project was granted by the council on November 6.
In another effort, Raleigh City Council is focusing on adding affordable housing near a planned bus line, the Western Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route. Since 2021, efforts have been underway to find suitable land close to this future transit line. On August 26, the city agreed to purchase two properties on Hillsborough Street for $2.55 million, funded by the 2020 Affordable Housing Bond. The city plans to finalize this purchase by December.
These projects aim to integrate housing with access to public transportation as part of Raleigh's broader strategy for addressing affordable housing needs.
