The Carolina Hurricanes faced a setback on Saturday, losing 4-3 to the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. Despite Andrei Svechnikov's two goals, the Hurricanes were unable to secure a win after conceding four goals in the second period.

Svechnikov initially put Carolina ahead with a power-play goal that deflected off an Islanders' defender. After New York equalized early in the second period, Svechnikov responded with another goal shortly after. However, the Islanders quickly took control of the game by scoring three consecutive goals within less than nine minutes.

In the third period, Jesperi Kotkaniemi managed to narrow the gap with a late goal for Carolina, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. Pyotr Kochetkov made 21 saves from 25 shots during the match.

Carolina struggled during the second period, managing only two shots on goal and allowing several turnovers which led to opportunities for their opponents. In contrast, they outshot New York significantly in the final period but were unable to capitalize due to Ilya Sorokin's performance in net.

Andrei Svechnikov continued his strong play with back-to-back multi-point games, contributing six points over these performances and currently ranking third on his team for scoring this season.

Reflecting on their performance, head coach Rod Brind'Amour noted: "The first period was average... Then in the second, we just didn't want to play the way we need to." Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere added: "It's hard to chase games in this league... We've got to get it figured out."

The Hurricanes have an off day scheduled before facing San Jose Sharks at home on Tuesday.
