Red Hat, Inc. has announced that T-Mobile will utilize Red Hat OpenShift to power its common telco cloud across core and far edge business operations. This decision is aimed at automating operations, supporting cloud-native 5G applications, and exploring new opportunities in edge computing, private networks, and IoT.
The partnership was revealed at MWC Barcelona on February 18, 2025. With Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus, T-Mobile aims to leverage a flexible and scalable platform to enhance innovation by streamlining operations, enhancing automation, reducing costs, and accelerating the time-to-market for new applications and services.
The demand for cloud flexibility among telecommunications service providers is increasing as they seek to cut costs and support new investments. Implementing Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus allows T-Mobile to deploy a common telco cloud that addresses these challenges by consolidating infrastructure across various workloads. This includes end-to-end automation for greater operational efficiency and standardized training, support, compliance, and security capabilities to reduce risk and complexity.
Fran Heeran, Vice President of Global Telecommunications at Red Hat stated: "As telecommunications service providers face increasing demands for cloud flexibility, consistency and cost optimization, Red Hat OpenShift provides a standardized, scalable foundation to drive efficiency and innovation."
Lori Ames from T-Mobile commented: “T-Mobile’s multipurpose cloud will bridge us from a traditional telco to a dynamic techco... By partnering with best-in-class providers like Red Hat... we’re redefining connectivity for the digital economy by meeting our customers where they need us.”
Red Hat's collaboration with T-Mobile aims to unlock new opportunities for streamlined operations while providing a flexible platform that meets current needs and prepares for future advancements.
