Raleigh is participating in the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities (BASC) initiative, joining 25 other cities in an effort to build sustainable communities. The initiative provides Raleigh with a three-person innovation team (i-team) that assists the city in addressing resident needs through systems thinking, data analysis, and project management. This team also focuses on civic design, which involves community engagement and research to tackle public issues.

The i-team operates under the City Manager’s Office and collaborates with the Office of Sustainability and the Office of Strategy & Innovation. Partnerships have been formed with organizations such as Southeast Raleigh Promise and Partners for Environmental Justice.

The BASC initiative's goal is to create low-carbon communities that are resilient and economically thriving. In Raleigh, challenges such as rising heat, flooding, and energy costs pose climate and economic difficulties for residents. Rapid growth has led to increased living costs and displacement risks, affecting both economic stability and environmental health.

Raleigh is dedicated to becoming a national example of responsible growth management by addressing how growth impacts legacy residents and neighborhoods disproportionately. The city's commitment aims for all residents to feel safe, belong, and enjoy well-being.

“We aim for all people who call Raleigh home to feel a sense of safety, belonging, health and well-being.”
