Today, Governor Josh Stein visited a dairy farm in Haywood County to observe the impact of Hurricane Helene on the family operating it and assess the damage caused by the storm. During his visit, he urged the General Assembly to pass relief funding for Hurricane Helene, which has faced delays.
"Many family farms have been struggling after Hurricane Helene," stated Governor Josh Stein. "They need us to do our jobs, so I urge the House and Senate to come together and send me a bill to get western North Carolina aid as quickly as possible."
In his initial State of the State address, Governor Stein emphasized the need for passing Hurricane Helene relief and praised citizens aiding their neighbors in recovery efforts.
Since assuming office, Governor Stein has prioritized western North Carolina's recovery with urgency and accountability:
- He encouraged residents of western North Carolina to apply for assistance through the Private Road and Bridge Program.
- FEMA approved Governor Stein’s requests for 30-day extensions on its Public Assistance program and Individual Assistance Program this month.
- Last month, he requested an additional $19 billion in federal funds aimed at infrastructure restoration, home repair support, and reducing future natural disaster impacts.
- The governor continues seeking state funding following his request for $1.07 billion to meet immediate needs post-Hurricane Helene.
The Governor’s Recovery Office for Western North Carolina has introduced a recovery dashboard providing updates, resources, and information on progress related to Helene recovery efforts.
