A new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) has been installed to enhance pedestrian safety at the intersection of Lake Wheeler Road and Goode Street. The area is notably busy due to its proximity to the State Farmers Market, Healing Transitions, and the Route 21 bus stop.

The RRFB system includes two LED lights that flash rapidly when a pedestrian presses the button, alerting drivers to the presence of someone crossing the street. According to the Federal Highway Administration, such systems can reduce pedestrian crash risk by 50%.

Additional safety measures at the intersection include a visible crosswalk and a pedestrian refuge island, allowing safe crossing of one lane at a time. The installation complies with ADA standards to ensure accessibility.

This development is part of the Vision Zero initiative focused on preventing serious injuries and fatalities on city streets. Vision Zero and GoRaleigh are collaborating to improve safety in areas with significant bus use, aiming to make transportation safer for the community.

Further installations of RRFBs at other crosswalks near busy transit stops are planned to continue efforts in pedestrian protection.

Vision Zero is committed to developing a safer, healthier, and more equitable transportation system.
