City of Raleigh issued the following announcement on Feb. 18.
Raleigh Police Officer Charles "Charlie" Ainsworth officially returned to work on Jan. 9, 2020, exactly one year after being shot while on duty. He fought his way back through numerous surgeries and medical procedures to continue to fulfill his childhood dream of being a police officer.
His was recognized by the City and Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin on Feb.18. During the Tuesday council meeting Mayor Baldwin proclaimed Feb. 18, 2020 as Officer Charlie Ainsworth Day.

Proclamation
WHEREAS, Charles “Charlie” Ainsworth dreamed as a young child of one day becoming a police officer; and,
WHEREAS, He moved to Raleigh to attend North Carolina State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and,
WHEREAS, Charlie Ainsworth was a member of the 117th Session of the Raleigh Police Department’s Training Academy, and became an officer in December 2017 and,
WHEREAS, on January 9, 2019, Officer Ainsworth was shot at close range while answering a call about a suspicious vehicle, and has fought courageously through numerous surgeries and medical procedures; and
WHEREAS, Officer Ainsworth returned to work one year later on January 9, 2020, with the full support of his fellow officers at the Raleigh Police Department, and his return to work was and continues to be celebrated by residents, visitors and all those who are affiliated with the City of Raleigh; and,
WHEREAS, Officer Ainsworth further demonstrates his dedication to serving the community on both a personal and professional level and stands as an example for all to follow.
NOW, THEREFORE, do I, Mary-Ann Baldwin, Mayor of the City of Raleigh, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim February 18, 2020, in the City of Raleigh, as
OFFICER CHARLIE AINSWORTH DAY
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of Raleigh, North Carolina, to be affixed this 18th day of February 2020.
